42: Hernan Sias – Podcasting as Prospecting

    SUMMARY:

How do you define what you do? For today’s guest, Hernan Sias, the answer wasn’t always so simple. After years of gathering expertise and experience he realized the value in sharing knowledge and knowhow with others and thus discovered purpose. As one half of the widely successful Business Bros team, Hernan is many things but put simply, he is a salesman. One who meets people, identifies what needs they have and connects them with people who can help fill that need.

Hernan shares how the business began years ago and what steps he took to grow into the consultant, teacher, and salesperson he is today. His “all in” moment came through his own venture into the podcasting space.  With his brother James, Hernan runs the Business Bros podcast to reach others with opportunity and expertise as well as a utilizing it as vehicle for reaching more clients, allowing the pair to see substantial growth.

Daniel gets in the weeds with Hernan to talk about how he harnesses the power of networking to grow his business while growing others.  For Hernan, the key to success is being able to focus.  Knowing how to define your vision clearly and stick to that purpose is what has enabled him to weather the constant challenge of being an entrepreneur and allowed him to take risks with less worry.

Hernan’s tenacity is infectious and his advice simple, yet poignant. Finding meaning looks different for each of us but there are common strategies that can be implemented no matter your pursuit.  By focusing less on the dollars and more on the passion you can learn things along the way that will help you support a life worth living.

Enjoy this candid conversation between two “all in” entrepreneurs.

    KEY QUOTES:

    • “I was uncomfortable calling myself a sales professional or a salesman, but the truth of matter is that’s what I do. I meet people and I identify what needs they have and I connect them with people who can help fill that need.”
    • “There are so many different labels that you put on yourself and it’s really which one do you want to identify with the most? What is it that you wake up in the morning and this is the thing that you’re absolutely thinking about?”
    • “Follow one course until successful, that’s focus.”
    • “That’s the peaks and valleys of being an entrepreneur; when it pays off, it pays off nice and it’s really good. But you’re going to fail like five or six or seven times in the different investments until the one pays off.”
    • “You know when you talk about going all in, where are you putting your dollars? Where are you taking those huge risks? Because again, that’s where your focus is.”
    • “I love those a-ha moments, when the little bell goes off or lightning strikes their brain. Those are the most powerful moments to me in life, because what I’ve gone through has now been shifted in not just a lesson, but in wisdom.”
    • “I found a way to impact lives that’s meaningful for me, and so that’s really where I’m shooting for at this point in my career, I’m still going after that.”
    • “What you learned is worthless. It’s about taking action The action part is everything.”
    • “If you take action with what you learned, you’re going to make an impact. The cool thing about when you take action is you get a result. It may not be the result you want, it may not be the result you would (have) intended, but you get a result and once you have the result, you can improve upon that.”
    • “Don’t chase the dollars. Chase that that passion of what you like to do.”

    Daniel Giordano

    SUMMARY:

Would you prefer to rent or own the building? For today’s guest, Frank Agin, it’s no contest. Once he realized the potential in networking, he was “all in” with his vision to develop and franchise AmSpirit as an invaluable point of connection for entrepreneurs, sales reps and professionals nationwide. In this episode, Daniel does a deep dive to understand the power of AmSpirit, an innovative organization supporting the exchange of qualified referrals through 17 franchises in eight states – and counting!

Frank shares a bit about his early years and how he morphed from a freshly minted law school grad to employee at a Big Six accounting firm to starting up his own private practice in Ohio. An active community member and busy father of three nearly grown children, AmSpirit’s founder had his “all in” moment after realizing the power of networking and the potential to use his talents as a connector to build relationships among people from all walks of life: not just fellow attorneys, but also accountants, real estate agents, corporate coaches, financial advisers, web designers, travel agents and more. “These small business people are going to make it happen,” says Frank. “They are constantly finding ways to be relevant.” Frank’s unique and fully supported franchise model fosters community and business development – which has been more of a challenge than ever amidst pandemic uncertainty.

Frank and Daniel talk about the anxiety-provoking realities – as well as the unexpected silver linings – AmSpirit franchisees have found in the wake of Covid19. They focus on the importance of sharing resources and ideas and the role of ingenuity (who knew Zoom had so much to offer as a forum for networking and featured speakers?). They share their take on character traits to fall back on in times of stress and generous, positive “karma” as the greatest community service and business value-add around.
Frank has made bold choices and stayed the course with his entrepreneurial vision, through good times and … not as good. Refusing to be taken off-track by the latest investment fad or occasional self-doubt, AmSpirit thrives because the visionary behind it understands that building an actual long-term business asset requires steady faith and persistence.

39: When you have stinkin’ thinkin’ everything else stinks – Aaron Janx

    Daniel Giordano

    About Aaron Janx

My guest today is Aaron Janx. He’s going to share an amazing message on the power of being able to sell and also create the life that you want.

Aaron was raised in a family of sales people. His mom was an entrepreneur and his dad and grandfather were both in the timeshare business. Aaron was a bit of a rebel and never liked to learn what people wanted him to learn, he wanted to learn what he wanted to learn. He was bright but he got bored and wouldn’t apply himself. As a result he didn’t do well in school and graduated by the skin of his teeth with a 1.99.

He went to work for a Fortune 500 company, first as an errand boy and then he moved into sales and became a manager and executive sales trainer. Then he got into real estate investing at the age of nineteen. He did really well in that and was getting checks multiple times a month that were more than most people make in a year. He was living high on the horse until they changed the way houses are sold and then the real estate collapse happened.

The money dried up, he was broke and didn’t know what to do. He was prideful and wouldn’t go out and get a job because he was a big shot in his own eyes. He had a wife and kids by this time and had to go on food stamps. He finally said “I can’t live like this”.

He went back to work, figuring out how to make it work in real estate. He also got back into doing sales training gigs. He did the same thing he did to become successful in the first place, he just had to switch the way he acquired properties. He was determined to figure it out, which he did.

Today he is helping coaches all over the world in client acquisition. He teaches them sales skills and he teaches them how to go out and prospect, get clients, set up marketing automation and then convert those people on a sales call. He gets them going and then they can make $10,000 in their first week.

    What changed for Aaron

It came down to attitude. He had a bad attitude because he couldn’t do things the way that he did before. Do you ever notice that when things are good they get better and when things are bad they get worse? It has nothing to do with what’s going on out there and everything to do with what’s going on between your two ears. He realized that and decided to get back to it and figure it out.

    Aaron’s program

At first he would mentor one on one but it became very laborious because you end up saying the same thing to different people over and over. So he combined it to do group mentoring. He considers himself a mentor and not a coach because a mentor has the right to kick you in the butt to get you in gear and a coach has to treat you nicely.

He takes them through an eight week process which covers:

    • Lead generation
    • Prospecting
    • Closing sales on the phone when you do what are called strategy sessions.
    • Automation
    • Framing
    • Getting your prospects qualified
    • How to have a program that’s sellable. You can be the world’s greatest sales person and if you don’t have something sellable you’re still stuck.

    Advice from Aaron

Go out and learn to be a sales person even if you don’t think that you are. Everyone is selling everyday whether they know it or not because everyone at some point needs to influence people. As long as you know how to sell you can always go out and sell something as long as it’s moral, ethical and legal.

Get books on selling because that’s the best personal development you can ever do in your life. It will help you become a better conversationalist and friend because you will know how to articulate ideas and concepts and ask good questions. The best sales people ask the best questions.

    Misconception

The misconception is that only extroverts make good sales people. Introverts actually make better sales people because you empathize better, ask good questions. Extroverts tend to not listen as well or ask good questions. All an introvert needs to do is learn to adapt a few of the skills that the extrovert has like being friendly, having a good hand shake and making good eye contact.

38: From Cooking to Internet Marketing

    Daniel Giordano

    About Willie Crawford

Willie is an amazing internet marketer and has influenced many people over the years.

He joined the military after college with a degree in economics and business. He spent 20 years in the military, took part in several conflicts, travelled the world and learned 19 languages. He started an online marketing business 6 years before he retired, and so when he was in a position to retire he already had hosted online seminars and was well placed to market his own products and affiliate products. Currently he is enjoying helping small local offline businesses to use the internet to get customers through their doors.

Willie spoke at his first seminar in 2002 on the strength of selling a cookbook through internet marketing techniques. This led to him hosting his own seminar as a guru in his own right. He was still in the military at the time and drove 13 hours to make it to the seminar and not miss work!

He is a family man having 2 daughters and 4 grandchildren. He enjoys spending time with his family and his internet savvy lifestyle enables him to spend time as he wishes on beaches amongst other places wherever he may be. Willie grew up very poor – he was on welfare most of his youth. He started working at the age of 6, making 4 dollars a day for a 12 hour shift.

Some common threads Willie has seen in business over the years.

    • Setting up for failure or slow growth is a result of him trying to do too much himself.
    • Now he tries to pick one project and see it through to completion.
    • He’s learned to only do a few things and outsource everything else.
    • Willie has learned to say ‘no’ more – he can’t do everything, and now he wants to do less but still have an impact on the world.

Willie learned that you get what you ask for – as he demonstrated with the varied assignments he served during his years in the military – always the nice places – Hawaii, Alaska and Florida to name a few.

These days he is excited about launching a television cooking show with a client and a friend. They need to raise one million dollars from crowd funding. This is the biggest thing Willie has ever taken on. He feels that he is now at a stage in his life where he wants to make a difference with what he does, and use his money to do good in the world.

Starting out Willie decided to build a following around a passion that he had – so the natural thing for him to do was to work on a cookbook having a farming and agricultural background. Raised by his grandmother after his mother moved to another state to pursue work, he was taught to cook from the age of 6. After cooking all his life from then he put together a website about cooking in 1997, and the rest is history. He still publishes a newsletter every day. This newsletter initially led to him writing his cookbook – where he was in the enviable position of having orders for 200 copies before he even wrote the first word of the book.

    Willies Mistakes in Business.

    • One of Willie’s was that he purchased a hosting company from his friend. A month into the venture the head of tech support disappeared – unfortunately he had died. He was essentially a one-man operation who had DNS servers scattered all over accounts, and it   led to the entire company with over 1,000 customers to fall apart. Several customers sued him as a result. He felt this was the darkest point of his career.
    • He also lost a software platform that was essentially a video distribution service. He was talked into investing into the platform that was extremely poorly managed, the software wasn’t working properly – and so it fell apart. This taught him to be very careful about what partnerships he got into.
    • He was preparing to launch a ‘groupon’ style site and then one of the principles in the project pulled the plug after Willie had contracted with other people using about 50,000 dollars of his own cash. Unfortunately, he had to still pay the money.
    • He had a merchant account that was hacked into and that drove one of his businesses out of business. He lost tens of thousands of dollars during that time.

Willie feels you have to learn from your own mistakes and from the mistakes of others. He has mentors, mastermind groups and accountability partners that help keep him from making more mistakes.

    Willies Top Tip.

    • Don’t be afraid to dream big. Have a good reason to do what you are doing.

Have you ever written down your goals and passions in life? What are some goals that you’ve written down but you didn’t achieve? And also think about those goals that you have achieved.

“As a man thinketh, so is he”. In your heart, what are you thinking right now? Are you thinking about your goal? Is there a goal that you would really love to do but… No buts. What it really comes down is to this: having a clear intention. If you’ve ever had a goal and haven’t been able to achieve it. Could it be that possibly you haven’t achieved the goal because you haven’t committed to it?

If you really are passionate about sharing your story and impacting people’s lives, what is it that’s going to get you to move and take action to do that?

Do you have a vision? Most people don’t have a vision. If you have a vision you are lightyears ahead.

The HOW is not nearly as important as the WHY is very important in goal setting. recognizing that, what can you do differently TODAY? You have to take ACTION on your dreams and goal, and why not do it NOW? you don’t need to wait. you can choose to play today. go out and make it happen…

35: Achieving Sensational Results with Duane Cummings

    Daniel Giordano

    About Duane Cummings

Duane was born in Germany before his family moved and settled on the West Coast of the United States. His family was poor, but he never realized the challenges he was over coming as he thought life was great. After losing a soccer scholarship he entered the military just like his father was. After a varied military career he left the military for love as he fell in love all over again with and married his high school sweetheart.

    Duane’s Business Progression

    • Duane got started in business as a small-scale entrepreneur in the military, loaning money and taking peoples duties and as a coach.
    • After an epiphany at this 9 year olds birthday, his vision and priorities shifted away from coaching to other business opportunities.
    • One of the biggest lessons Duane learned came when a faulty exit sign caused his antique business to burn to the ground and he wasn’t properly insured. He still feels that this unfortunate experience made him a wiser businessperson.
    • Duane says although he had an income and he was making money in this phase of his development he didn’t feel very successful.
    • A private label clothing company followed when a colleague suggested that as Duane was getting clothing made that he get extra made, save money, and have extra product to give away – which Duane did, and this lead to his own clothing label.
    • The consultancy business started because people wanted to know his story and how he could help their business.

    Mentors

    • Father Victor Roberts took an interest in Duane as a person by asking telling deep questions that made him think deeply about himself.
    • Every question he ever asked still rings in Duane’s ears to this day.

Duane still doesn’t feel he has arrived yet. He wants to stay hungry for success.

It was only when he started consulting with a large oil company he realized that he was no longer talking about hundreds or thousands of dollars but rather millions of dollars, and this brought a whole new level of understanding about his achievements and evidence that he must be doing something right.

Right now Duane is working on his books, speaking – a lot of which is focused mainly on younger audiences in universities and schools.

    Mission behind Non Profits

    • To aid others, act on ideas and achieve sensational results.
    • Hi focus is to give what others want, not to try and enforce his beliefs or products on others.

Duane’s Book – ‘Selling Out Your Funeral’

    • Duane got inspiration from a funeral of a friend whose son had died at the age of 20. The school gym was packed and were literally people streaming out the doors – and it got him to thinking of how many people would actually come to his funeral.
    • He rationalized that if you were to sell out a concert you would not start selling it the day before it was on, so why shouldn’t you go out now and start setting seeds that will serve others and indirectly cause you to be remembered.
    • There are lots of ways that you could monetize bringing value to others, so it need not be a total sacrifice without reward.

    Final Thoughts

    • It’s all about taking action – do it. Life is about an action and that action is doing.

34: From Welfare to Living the American Dream with Howard Partridge

34: From Welfare to Living the American Dream with Howard Partridge

    Daniel Giordano

    About Howard Partridge

Howard has a unique knack for being able to coach people, and he’s on a daily basis impacting thousands of people worldwide.

Howard is originally from Lower Alabama and grew up in a family of 7 kids in quite a rundown old shack surviving on welfare. At 18 years he moved to Houston. He started his career being a professional waiter and married into an Italian family using the money he got from Wedding presents to start his own business from the trunk of his car. After learning 2 important lessons from Michael Gerber – (1) You gotta have systems in your business and (2) you have to understand what your primary aim is he started to coach other business owners to use their own unique systems, and has continued to do so for 20 years.

To get into the coaching side of the business Howard started writing articles, talking at seminars and found that people just liked the systems that he had and what he had to say, and this led on to the successful career that he has today.

One of the greatest associations that Howard has is with Zig Ziglar and his family which first lead to him creating some video content for clients, and then led onto contributing a quote and a chapter to Zig’s final book, and eventually becoming the small business coach for Ziglar.

    Lessons Learned from Michael Gerber:

    • Get people in with the lowest level of experience and develop their skills to your own liking.
    • You’ve got to have systems and communicate to these people properly.

    A Day In The Life

    • Get up at 6:30 AM
    • Read a chapter of the bible and pray, start working on projects.
    • Live member Webcast.
    • Ensure to eat properly and take exercise.

Faith is everything – Howard is a born again Christian and proud of it, but he has no issue with people who are non-believers. At his conferences he does a Spiritual night – a time to share faith and share prayers with each other.

Plans for 2016 include how Howard wants to bring his groups to cities around the world to help small business owners.

One Tip from Howard to Business Owners:

    • Get a coach that will help you find that one focussing question in your life that will solve all your major issues. Every successful person in business no matter how famous or successful has a coach. Howard himself has 2 coaches and a strength trainer.

    Mentors:

    • Howard has a network of Mentors and Clients that in his own words ‘ kick his butt ‘ and keep him focussed on the job at hand. They have no hesitation in telling him if he deviates from his principles, and Howard refers to this as his Community, which is so important.

    About Manny Wolfe

Manny Wolfe had a rather unconventional start to life. His story starts out with being born into a cult in the late 60’s in the San Francisco Bay area, where he was programmed from birth not to fit into outside society. At 8 ½ years old, the cult moved from right into the middle of one of the top 10 most violent ghettos at the time, Stockton, CA. Overnight, he experienced violence and spent the next 4 years in a constant state of flight-or-fight mode and the children in the cult received no protection or guidance from the adults. Between the countercultural mindset instilled in him, 4 years of violence, and an environment where drug use was encouraged, by the time he was 12 and they moved away, he was set on a path of drug abuse, addiction, criminal behavior, jails and violence.

It took years for him to even realize that his youth was not normal and, finally, he had a moment of clarity at 28 years old that sent him running. He disappeared from the life and the crowd that he was in, never to be heard from again. That decision marked the exact moment when his trajectory started to change. From that time forward, he began to pursue self-exploration, personal development, and studied what internal mechanisms had led him to that point.

He looked to thought leaders and as he started absorbing their teachings and undoing his own damage bit by bit, the person that emerged was someone who was tender, vulnerable and wanted to be of service to others. It would be many years still until he put their thoughts and his calling together. During the intervening years he did everything from construction to being a playwright, until one day his fiancé told him he should write a book about his experiences.

After the book was done, the question became, “how do I get a platform to sell it?” A podcast was the obvious answer. From there, the possibilities just opened up a whole new life for Manny and today, he is a Public Speaking and Charisma Coach. If you need to deliver from the stage in a way that is dazzling, Manny will show you how to get there by using your body language and speech as your secret weapons.

    Most Influential Mentor:

    • For some time, she took a bible passage literally and looked for that one woman who would be her ‘teacher’ in life. In time, she realized it wasn’t about just finding that one person; it would be several women that related to different aspects of her life.
    • Of course, one of her mentors, especially in marriage, is her mom.
    • But, there were also authors, radio shows, bloggers, conferences, workshops, and church peers, who would say something to her in passing that was bigger than just that moment. That’s when she discovered she had mentors all along her path.

    Intentional Parenting:

    • Susan and her husband made a decision very early on that she would be a stay-at-home full-time mom so they designed their entire life around that lifestyle from day one, including living way below their means and having a rental asset.
    • From those early choices, everything else flowed. Each decision started with the question of “how do we continue to ensure that we are creating the culture and the dynamic in our family that we want?”
    • Essentially, they created core values and used those values to determine every decision.

    A Day in the Life:

    • She was treating parenting as a sprint instead of a marathon. She was wearing herself and everyone else out!
    • She’s gotten to a point today where she’s learned to pace herself. They now only pursue the activities that are truly special and keep them connected to being intentional as a family.
    • Her whole family is entrepreneurial, including 2 of her teenagers. Homeschooling allows the family to have flexibility for education and enrichment as well as pursuing their individual and family businesses.

    ‘Mom on a Mission’:

    • Susan’s mission is having a message that encourages parents that it’s not so much about what we ‘do’ (our approach) but more about living a life of purpose and who we need to be to ensure our children are getting positive messages in our very crazy-busy world.
    • From writing the book, she’s had more doors of opportunity open up and she loves doing her workshops and one-on-one client sessions, where she works with moms on everyday issues as well as handling the big life transitions.
    • Her mission is to create a non-judgmental atmosphere where moms can go to get the advice and tools they need to deal with the challenges they face.

    Advice on Being ‘All-In’:

    • Accepting your calling is a journey in itself. As you open the door and step into your role, the opportunities will continue to become bigger.
    • You always have room to grow as a person as long as you are committed to your endeavors.
    • Get clear on where you need clarity and the direction that you want to go. Then, seek the wisdom to help you bridge the gap from you are to where you want to be.
