It’s contagious! Hear about how a breakfast with Dan came at a crucial fork in Jamal’s road and what he believes have been the biggest stumbling blocks to success so far. Heading into 2022 laser-focused on growing his business, Jamal is all about supporting his family, employees and broader community. And no matter how much he has to celebrate, he remains mindful: “Success feeds your ego. It does not feed your spirit. The more successful you become, the more you have to continue to intentionally humble yourself.”

You can learn more about the workshop that kicked off Jamal’s “all-in” investment in himself here.

    KEY TOPICS:

    • About where and how Jamal grew up, in a “semi-Christian” family in Georgia and Louisiana. As a teenager he felt somewhat adrift, until he was struck by an epiphany that changed the entire direction of his life.
    • Jamal’s path wasn’t pre-ordained but rather something he “divinely stumbled upon” while he had his eyes on other things. He was initially working as a pastor and non-profit mentor, which wasn’t enough to make ends meet once Jamal married. He started to look for additional means of income, and happened into digital marketing by chance.
    • A class for entrepreneurs where Jamal initially felt out of his depth turned out to be the gateway he needed to level up his burgeoning business. Shortly after a breakfast with Daniel, Jamal went “all-in” with a $30,000 investment in growing his venture.
    • Jamal explains the inception of The One University, a membership-based dating website that has helped thousands of Christians looking for their perfect match.
    • His next big venture – which came in a flash of prayerful meditation – was the merging of his passion for spreading the message of Jesus and his skills as a digital entrepreneur.
    • Jamal is now right in the middle of his next big journey, developing a partnership venture somewhat similar to a publishing business model in which his team manages production, social media ads, strategy and other elements for online workshops and forums.
    • About the challenges: Three M’s.
      • Mindset – Stay positive, surrounding yourself with role models and supporters who understand the risks required to move forward.
      • Messaging – Be mindful of whom you’re serving – how and why – as you evolve. Continuing to refine content and staying attuned to the mission and source.
      • Money Management – Business expenses of about $150,000 per month and carrying people’s livelihood is a constant burden.
    • Jamal celebrates his blessings every day – and stays mindful of his mandate to stay humble in order to hear and be nourished by “downloads from heaven.”

    KEY QUOTES:

    • “I fell in love with God in a way that will forever mark me, where there’s no other love than the love for Jesus. I experienced it myself and that’s what put me on the fast-track to telling the entire world.”
    • “Every single moment that I waste trying to figure things out or get somebody else to teach me is time wasted from me getting closer to the impact that I was created to create in the world.”
    • “I invested in my ability to go and make it happen. I was investing in myself. And I think a lot of people don’t think about that … The moment that you bet on yourself you create this inner competition.”
    • “In this one moment I saw these two seasons of my life collide and it all made sense for what I’m called to do.”
    • “It’s a challenge for me to continue to up-level my mindset at every new level. At every new level, there’s a new devil … It’s a mental battle. Can I do this? Do I have what it takes?”
    • “It’s not easy at all to continue having the focused intentionality to grow in every area of your life.”
    • “Success feeds your ego. It does not feed your spirit. The more successful you become, the more you have to continue to intentionally humble yourself.”
    • “If I’m not in a good place with (the Holy Spirit) then I’m not getting fresh information, fresh downloads from heaven – and that’s what people are coming to me for.”

92: Dr. Douglas Brackmann, Author and Psychologist

    SUMMARY:

Dr. Douglas Brackmann wants to help you figure out whether you’re a member of his tribe: The Driven. In this turbocharged All-In Podcast conversation, Doug defines the neurological as well as sociological and temperamental differences between “hunters” and “farmers.” Commonly seen in entrepreneurs, pro-athletes, inventors, adventurers and Navy SEALs, research has shown that certain genes can manifest resilient, highly focused people who also tend to be impulsive and easily distracted. While these traits enabled our ancient ancestors to survive, in today’s climate they can create havoc. But what the world tells you is a disorder like ADD or OCD may in fact be your biggest gift.

As an author and entrepreneur, Doug has put his dual psychology doctorates to work by developing content, tools and a community of support for the Driven. He wants those of us who are wired for hunger, curiosity and a desire to see what’s over the next hill to understand why. Instead of self-sabotaging or suffering imposter syndrome, feeling out of sync or unrewarded, he wants his fellow “hunters” to learn how their brains work and why. He uses his psychological expertise to explain what it means to be driven, as well as practices to help you stay present and fully focused in the now. Driven, says Doug, is the difference between dreaming and doing. He’s sharing tools designed to recognize your most authentic identity, harness your gifts and banish counter-productive shame. He provides a template for the difference between “farmers” and “hunters” as well as some of the traits that define the latter:

    • High tolerance for risk.
    • Ability to think about multiple concepts simultaneously.
    • High quotient for resilience and hard-charging.
    • Eyes constantly on the horizon.

Sound like any driven entrepreneurs you might know?

You can take Doug’s “Are You Driven?” assessment here. Click here to learn more about Doug’s book, “Driven: Understanding and Harnessing the Genetic Gifts Shared by Entrepreneurs, Navy SEALs, Pro Athletes, and MAYBE You.”

    KEY TOPICS:

    • Doug shares a little bit of his background, including early experiences as a high school drop-out that prompted a desire to understand himself and drove the pursuit of dual PhDs in psychology.
    • About the human genome’s development as well as the advent of the fMRI, both of which have offered transformational insights into how we’re all individually wired.
    • How and why Doug came to write “Driven: Understanding and Harnessing the Genetic Gifts Shared by Entrepreneurs, Navy SEALs, Pro Athletes, and MAYBE You.”
    • Doug explains the hunter-farmer dichotomy, in which the vast majority of humans are genetically predisposed to be content with routine, even boredom, while a small percentage of the herd is hard-wired to bolt.
    • The neural wiring among “hunters,” whose dopamine receptors drive them to pursue whatever is over the next hill, predestine them to be wanderers.
    • Where “farmers” are neurologically hard-wired to be satisfied by performing repetitive tasks and following executive functioning to reinforce identity, the brains of “hunters” are geared toward eyeballs-on immediacy and risk.
    • Doug shares the origins of his meditation practice, which traces back to his imposter syndrome, chronic discontent and multi-thinking brain.
    • The literal and metaphorical ways in which long-range shooting is grounding; demands total focus that forces our “monkey mind” to be fully present.
    • For Doug, meditation isn’t relaxation. It’s a state of being present, a state of grace in which you experience internal calm and peace in relationship to everything else.

    KEY QUOTES:

    • “I always felt there was something missing or wrong in my life. It’s called boredom … In a farmer’s world, I look crazy.”
    • “Mindfulness doesn’t mean that you’re relaxed. It means that you’re ready either for someone to punch you in the face or give you a flower.”
    • “(Being driven) is a gift and a curse because this is a farmer’s world. It has never been safer, never been easier. Ever.”
    • “This is a farmer’s world, designed by farmers and built by farmers. The school system was based upon creating good employees for Ford, assembly line workers.”
    • “Take responsibility (for being a hunter). You can’t force the world to take care of your needs.”
    • “Hunters tend to use emotions as the basis of identity. Farmers don’t. They use logic and are rational.”
    • “The ego saboteur lives in your body. It doesn’t live in the brain.”
    • “With humility – which is the capacity to be honest with yourself – and a process, you can do anything.”
    • “Meditation has nothing to do with relaxation. It’s the present and being in the present moment.”

    About Doug:

Dr. Doug Brackmann is one of the leading psychologists to some of the most successful and Driven entrepreneurs, pro athletes, executives, and other top performers. After earning dual PhDs in psychology in 2002, Dr. Doug has devoted the last 15 years to working with the Driven population in order to help them focus their gifts to achieve personal and professional success. By combining the components of meditation, long-range shooting, and therapy, Dr. Doug helps those with Driven characteristics (often wrongfully diagnosed as ADD, ADHD, OCD, or other) to harness their hunter abilities so they can stop self-sabotaging, find fulfillment in life, and achieve the ultimate success

91: Maria Brito, Independent Art Advisor & Curator

    SUMMARY:

What happens when you’re a graduate of Harvard Law School with a great career ahead of you and it turns out … you don’t enjoy being an attorney? For Maria Brito, a highly successful independent art curator and advisor, the answer was clear: Time to reorient. On this episode of All-In she shares with Dan her journey to building the life she was meant to have – rather than the one society and her family programmed her to pursue. Author of the forthcoming book “How Creativity Rules the World: The Art and Business of Turning Your Ideas Into Gold,” Maria is full of encouragement and permission-giving validation for anyone who is ready to take the leap. She explains what it takes and mindsets that create unnecessary barriers. Going “All-In” isn’t for the faint of heart, says Maria. There will be failures and setbacks, but those stumbling blocks are part of opening up to new ideas, innovation and the fulfillment of lifelong dreams. Many people are coming out of pandemic craving more from life, observes Maria. Step One going forward from here? Daring to imagine the life you want!

Click here to preorder Maria’s book and if you email the receipt to maria@mariabrito.com you’ll receive free access to her creativity online course valued at $297.

    KEY TOPICS:

    • Maria shares her backstory, growing up in Venezuela prior to attending Harvard Law School and going into practice – which she didn’t like! Deciding to cast aside conditioning from her parents as to what constitutes “success,” she pursued an authentic path to becoming an art advisor and curator.
    • About Maria’s upcoming new book “How Creativity Rules the World: The Art and Business of Turning Your Ideas Into Gold.” Based on scientific and qualitative data, it’s a guide for people who are feeling stuck and ready to break through to a next level of innovation in their lives.
    • A few of the factors Maria believes hold people back from pursuing their dreams:
      • Complacency – Our brain’s biological imperative to resist change or risk.
      • Scarcity – People are often afraid of the inevitable income dip that initially occurs when we step back to go in another direction.
      • Risk-taking – Some people are less wired for pushing limits than others.
    • You’re never too old and Maria has the examples to prove it!
    • Maria shares candid memories of her uphill battle to transition to running her own venture within an industry she knew little about. The upside? There were no rules. She was completely open to blazing her own trail and innovating without preconceived limitations.
    • When we enter a new professional space, our eyes are open to receive everything and our minds are completely fresh (therefore at their most creative).
    • The fallout: How Maria’s family took the news when she made her drastic career change. They were initially shocked and even a bit skeptical, but there was no turning back. Maria was going for it – and living for herself her own best life!

    KEY QUOTES:

    • “It’s been the most fulfilling and happiest 13 years of my life (since) I took the 180-degree turn and literally went ‘all-in’ with what I’m doing.”
    • “Nothing is written in stone and there are no rights or wrongs if you want to make a transition. But you do have to believe that you have the skill set to succeed with a lot of challenges along way. It’s not going to be a smooth ride. Nothing is easy.”
    • “You cannot really disrupt an industry from within because you already know too much and have already accepted preconceived notions of what and when and how.”
    • “You have to understand what gets you going, gets you excited. There are opportunities and possibilities that people are sometimes not even aware of because they aren’t in a position to think.”
    • “Each one of us has a specific set of talents that gets to shine if you are in touch with your creativity.”

    About Maria:

Maria is an experienced Chief Executive Officer with a demonstrated history of more than a decade working in the fine arts industry, developing more than one hundred private and corporate art collections. A graduate of Harvard Law School, she is the author of two books, curator of contemporary art shows nationally and internationally, a creative designer and curator of art-centric experiences.

  • 87: Dr. Bruce L. Hartman

    87: Dr. Bruce L. Hartman

    SUMMARY:

This episode of The All-In Podcast features a successful businessman whose second career transcends commerce. It has been 12 years since Dr. Bruce Hartman stepped away from hard-charging executive roles at Fortune 500 companies in order to pursue advanced degrees in divinity and help others “walk towards a brighter future.” The author of four Christian books, a regular host of morning prayers and guest on popular podcasts, Bruce’s life is full of purpose today; not something he could have said with much conviction at the height of his corporate career. With his belief that “Jesus is Good for Business,” he offers a Biblical worldview that resonates on many levels with people of faith (or in search of faith) within the business community.

Daniel invites his guest to share the journey he has taken – including a moving moment of epiphany late one night when Bruce felt called quite literally into the light. This conversation highlights red flags that Type A entrepreneurs preoccupied with driving career development might want to consider. And Bruce offers some foundational advice for bringing mindfulness through openness, prayer and patience. Coming at such a busy time of year, this episode of All-In serves as a thoughtful reminder that no professional accomplishment or business achievement can take the place of life purpose and connection. With his life now centered on pro bono mentoring and sharing his message of faith, Bruce’s example challenges us to consider what truly defines success. For him, he concluded: “Instead of helping myself all the time, I completely changed my world and decided my mission in life is to help other people.”

More information about Bruce’s four current as well as forthcoming books can be found here.

You can enjoy additional episodes of All-In here.

    KEY TOPICS:

    • Growing up in Maine, an interest in money and commerce developed early and presaged Bruce’s successful corporate career. He played sports and had other diversions, but business was always his passion.
    • Working his way up to CFO of a Fortune 500 company seemed natural and inevitable, little did Bruce know he was actually part of a rarefied club. It was gratifying, but life was lived in 10-minute increments and spirituality – to which he’s always gravitated – was marginalized.
    • An inflection point: Bruce came to the realization that he was ignoring the voice of Jesus and as a result was suffering from discontentment and selfishness. In May 2009, he was out late at night walking, when a streetlight’s glow illuminated his path. He’d stopped praying and was suffering for it. He felt at rock bottom, so immersed in his career that he was bereft of faith.
    • Once reconnected with prayer and spirituality, Bruce started building an entirely different life – one devoted to helping others, pro bono.
    • The first step in his transformation included studying for his Master of Divinity at Drew University (and eventual doctorate). He didn’t know what his calling would become, but he started to discern that it wasn’t to be part of a fixed system. Rather, he is impassioned with counseling people at all phases of life in search of moving towards a brighter path.
    • Bruce also leads morning prayer, writes books (which illustrate his big-picture vision) and works advising nonprofits.
    • Counter-Cultural: Bruce enjoys planting images among people based on Jesus’s parables and their applicability in a business context tracing back to His métier as a carpenter. It can be challenging to some status-quo thinking, which Bruce welcomes.
    • Bruce’s Best Recommendations, especially for young people starting out:
      • Prayer is a deep channel for observation and understanding about the relationship we have with Jesus.
      • Patience is important. Don’t just lunge at what you observe. Sit with it.
      • The Lord is benevolent and choices are not binary; they are abundant, even to the point of confusion.
    • Bruce’s journey since the age of 55 has been rich with opening to possibility and connection. None of it would have been possible if he had remained boxed in and resisted prayer and reflection.
    • Words of Wisdom: Ignore human senses and invest instead in faith. However contrary or murky, there is a path that requires above all trust in the Lord’s way.

    KEY QUOTES:

    • “I was getting more and more despondent, despairing. Where are you? What are you? Who are you? What are you supposed to be doing? … And then I realized that I didn’t know how to pray anymore.”
    • “Instead of helping myself all the time, I completely changed my world and decided my mission in life is to help other people.”
    • “I’m not a great writer but I’m getting a lot better and am now on my fifth book, which is going out to the publisher very soon.”
    • “My belief is that Jesus is good for business … ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you’ is the greatest customer service statement any business could have.”
    • “Jesus is in business and he’s there every day. (But) we don’t listen every day.”
    • “Part of the problem I see in America today is that we have a tribal view. We tend to put everything in Column A or Column B and in fact it’s probably a mixture of both.”
    • “Trust (your) faith in all that you do. Don’t rely on human logic. Rely on the logic of the Lord.”

    About Ken:

Bruce is the author of four Christian books and helps people “walk towards a brighter future.” With a Masters in Divinity and PhD in addition to his long background as a corporate executive, he brings a unique hybrid perspective. Bruce is a regular guest on podcasts and advises nonprofit boards providing improved access to first-generation students. In combination with his pro bono coaching and philanthropic endeavors, Bruce’s social media platform has more than 50,000 followers and reaches a weekly audience of 10,000.

85: Gav Gillibrand, Wellness Coach and Author

    SUMMARY:

Getting motivated around diet and exercise can be a challenge, but this episode of the All-In podcast introduces a wellness coach and author whose energy is an irresistible motivator. Dan welcomes Gav Gillibrand, a nutritionist and physical trainer whose methods have equipped thousands of followers with the strategy and practical tools to tackle unwanted pounds – and vanquish them once and for all. Gav, who has written a book on the subject, believes that any fitness program is doomed when it’s overly restrictive. So the trick is creating sustainability through a simple understanding of calories in, calories out – and how to manage accordingly.

You’ll enjoy hearing about Gav’s eclectic professional path, which included some major detours – a stint on a popular British reality dating show and nearly two decades of global touring as a male stripper. While performance and entertainment might seem unlikely as resume-builders, Gav actually learned life lessons that are essential to the people skills, compassion and practicality he brings to his busy, executive clients today.

When it comes to fitness and weight loss, the mechanical piece is of course straightforward. It’s the psychological aspect that consumes at least 70% of Gav’s coaching time. Unpacking and understanding our emotional relationship with food is the first order of business. Without that clarity (and accountability), says Gav, it’s impossible to disengage from reflexive habits that do not serve. Once those doors have been unlocked, however, we’re all capable of moving towards a lifetime plan that leaves us satisfied, fueled, inspired and ready to go!

Click here to learn more about Gav’s book, “The GHG Method: A No ‘Bullshit’ Approach to Losing Body Fat, Upgrading Your Mind Set & Radically Changing Your Life”. Or click here for a free consultation with Gav.

You can enjoy additional episodes of All-In here.

    KEY TOPICS:

    • Gav shares a bit about his early life and obsession with all things sports and fitness, ultimately taking a detour from academics to become a personal trainer and returning to university having become a male stripper with a TV following from his appearance on “Blind Date,” a popular dating show in the UK at that time. Upon graduation he wound up going on tour and performing as an entertainer/stripper internationally until the age of 30. That’s the point at which he went full-on into fitness & nutrition coaching.
    • About transitioning: Daniels asks what it was that helped Gav reorient himself and commit to becoming a coach. Fitness and nutrition were already central to his livelihood as a stripper, so the relationship was very complementary.
    • Gav’s life experience as a stripper has proved crucial to his approach and success in the wellness industry. It gave him perspectives, experiences and human interactions that form the basis for much of his approach to clients and business development today.
    • Gav’s typical client is a man or woman ages 40-55, usually (but not always) married with kids. They are very often busy executives with 30 pounds or more to lose, who have tried everything.
    • Gav’s job as a coach is largely about providing credible information that people lack:
      • Dispelling weight loss myths.
      • Telling people the truth (about things like calories and exercise).
      • Helping them eat food and exercise in a way that’s not so restrictive that it’s unsustainable.
    • Much of his program is about helping clients understand the calories in, calories out concept and establish a personalized program that will work for them in the long term.
    • When it comes to achieving results, the mechanics of diet and exercise are the (relatively) easy part. What Gav sees as the major hurdle? All the psychological factors that play into our emotional connection with food:
      • Self-esteem
      • Self-image
      • Self-sabotage
      • Self-limiting beliefs
    • Food is the one addictive substance that humans have no choice but to have in their life, so the trick is figuring out how to co-exist and separate out emotional behaviors that do not serve. For Gav, that constitutes at least 70% of the substance of his coaching.
    • Unconscious eating is generally connected at some level with other psychological issues that are asking to be uncovered and addressed.
    • Getting a Jumpstart: Gav suggests that anyone looking to lose weight start by tracking calories. Create a food log and get familiar with the caloric measures of food in, energy out. That will set the stage for making some meaningful changes.
    • Gav provides further resources, information and resources (links below).

    KEY QUOTES:

    • “If I didn’t do a 17-hear hiatus (touring as a stripper), I don’t think I’d still be doing fitness and nutrition now. I learned so much, met so many people, great life experience you could never, ever get in a typical corporate lifestyle.”
    • “Maybe 20 years ago (my clients) were in quite good shape, but they’ve let things slide as they spent all their time building their business, making money or career or family.”
    • “People don’t understand how calories work, how you lose weight. It’s a strange topic … that can be very confusing.”
    • “When I mention the word diet, straightaway people think rabbit food, salads, gym five days a week, no booze, no carbohydrates.”
    • “My job is to teach people they can still have a life, they can still enjoy carbohydrates, drink a few drinks every week, if we can control the numbers. It’s all about calories in, calories out.”
    • “The mechanical side can be taught in half an hour. The (more complex) psychological aspect comes down to self-image, self-esteem, self-sabotage, self-limiting beliefs.”
    • “If information was all we needed, everyone would be rich, skinny and happy!”
    • “It’s not information, it’s implementation. Actually sticking to it and being consistent and recognizing, ‘Why do I do what I do?’ ”

80: Nina Cooke, Mindset Secret To Overcome Procrastination

    Daniel Giordano

    SUMMARY:

Entrepreneurial success requires more than keen business skills and strategy. This episode of All-In explores another essential component: Mindset. With his guest Nina Cooke, a coach who specializes in uncovering self-limiting beliefs, Dan explores the intersection between what we tell ourselves and what we’re able to achieve as a result. When the inner monologue is full of self-doubt, feelings of unworthiness or fear of rejection, we are inevitably going to wind up holding ourselves back.

Negative self-talk is unquestionably damaging, but many of us aren’t even aware of it. Nina’s practice is built around helping high-level executives, many of whom have already had business coaching, access another core element of growth and long-term achievement: Conscious and unconscious thoughts. Once brought to the surface, Nina helps people examine the roots of their inner monologue and consider alternative mindsets.

Drawn from her own early upbringing in England (and some of the patterns she developed that did not serve), as well as the journey she took to becoming a self-confident coach, Nina explains why she went “All-in” with this particular specialty and how intentionality changes not only careers but lives.

Interested in learning more about where you are with your own mindset? Nina is offering a free Millionaire Mindset scorecard here. And episodes of her podcast are available by clicking here.

    KEY TOPICS:

    • Nina shares a bit of background about her early family life and the ways in which it shaped her. She grew up feeling a sense of isolation, lack of agency, withdrawal and fear of authority. As she grew older, she often felt herself faking confidence.
    • Nina started out with a people-pleasing mindset that felt inauthentic. In having children of her own, she saw an innate confidence that made her curious. She wanted some of that same natural self-esteem!
    • It took some time but when Nina found the right process, she was transformed:
      • Instead of feeling that it was unsafe to be visible and that she wasn’t enough, she flipped it and embraced beliefs that were just the opposite.
      • She’s remains a work in progress, but the difference in how she shows up for the people in her personal and professional life has been remarkable.
    • How was it that Nina made the transition from getting coaching to becoming one: It happened when she realized that many business executives were being held back by mindsets or self-imposed limitations similar to those she’d overcome.
    • Nina shares a challenge she faced along the path to being “All-in” with her current coaching practice. Early on she wasn’t getting the penetration she wanted. People weren’t interested in her services. Solution? She stopped showing up as if on a sales call and started approaching prospective clients for a personal chat.
    • Some of the most common blocks Nina can trace to negative mindsets?
    • Imposter syndrome: In which an entrepreneur erroneously believes there is something about them that leaves them vulnerable to being exposed.
    • A self-limiting belief that rejection is scary: Some would-be entrepreneurs don’t get out of the gate for fear that someone will say no and crush them.
    • Persistent feelings of unworthiness are a close corollary to fear of rejection.
    • Does Nina have a typical client or common area in which business owners struggle? Generally they come to her when they realize that business coaching in and of itself will not be enough to remove the deeper mental blocks that are an impediment to growth and moving forward.
    • Nina offers her key piece of advice: Pay attention to your thoughts. Unless brought to the surface, what you are thinking shapes all kinds of choices, and not necessarily in ways that you’ll like. Write down your thoughts, get them out of your head and let go of any that are not serving you.

    KEY QUOTES:

    • “I thought I wasn’t likable and I wasn’t lovable, so I would try to get people to like me by trying to figure out what they wanted me to say and how they wanted me to behave.”
    • “I thought I could show entrepreneurs that they could start showing up in a bigger way, start raising their prices, reach out to people.”
    • “If we have a self-limiting belief that rejection is scary, we’re going to do everything within our power not to be in a position where someone can say no to us.”
    • “If you ask your client why they can’t have something, it will often come down to why they don’t feel they deserve it.”
    • “Get out of your head, get it down on paper and tell yourself: ‘I’m making it all up.’ Once you know it’s a lie, you’re not going to carry on buying into it.”
    • “I wish a limiting belief would dissolve forever, but often it will come back … but at least you’re becoming aware of where you’re holding yourself back.”

79: Tara Patten, Image Coach and Virtual Stylist

    SUMMARY:

This episode of All-In features a woman who clearly has found her perfect professional match. Tara Patten is an image coach and virtual stylist whose lively personality and passion for helping people uncover their best selves is nothing short of inspiring. Daniel hosts a conversation that is both energizing and informative.

While Tara is full of passion for her business and mission today, the road to get there was anything but a straight one. Born in England, raised and educated in Florida and Maryland, she was in search of a calling. That search took her to California and ultimately aboard cruise ships in the Caribbean, where she loved being a “shopping ambassador.” It was her first hint of where things ultimately would go. But, as is so often the case, there were a few storm clouds before blue sky broke through.

At one period, when the way forward seemed particularly murky, Tara realized there was only one thing to do – something she recommends we all consider when the chips are down: Ask for help. She got invaluable coaching and before long had conceived of the branding and styling niche she occupies so successfully today. Learn about the services she provides and the results she witnesses when her clients decide to focus on – and commit to – doing some personal work. This episode is like several seminars in one podcast. Tara is excited about showing up in the world and helping people put forth their very best selves – and the feeling it’s infectious!

    KEY TOPICS:

    • Tara shares a little about her background, which stretches from England to Florida to Maryland to California to becoming a shopping ambassador at sea on a cruise ship. All of these experiences have shaped her understanding of branding and communications.
    • How Tara made her “all-in” shift towards branding and image curation – something that lit her up like nothing else ever had.
      • She loves shopping.
      • She loves creating confidence.
      • She loves teaching people how to dress for their bodies.
    • Helping people discover who they are and represent in a way that’s empowering is a driving passion for Tara.
    • In addition to photo shoots and other styling options, Tara has recently added a service to help people (especially those in a life transition) create dating profiles.
    • Dan asks Tara about how she navigates when her entrepreneurial goals seem elusive. What pushes her through? Seeing the opportunity for growth.
    • Sometimes the paths that are darkest lead to reconsideration (often, as in Tara’s case, with the help of a coach) followed by a reconfiguration.
    • Tara has simple advice for people who are struggling, either personally or professionally: Ask for help.
    • When it’s time to get clarity, Tara recommends sitting down with a pen and paper. Ask yourself: What do you want? Who do you want to be?
    • Tara offers an exercise: Make the practice of journaling and asking yourself about your goals and dreams a daily morning ritual. It generates creativity and manifestations of all kinds.
    • A gratitude practice and coaching make great complements to a morning journaling ritual.
    • Tara is really excited about the community growing up around podcasts like Daniel’s and the impact that coaches are having on people.

    KEY QUOTES:

    • “If you’re going to start a movement and inspire people to buy what you have, you have to have that emotion attached, that reason behind it.”
    • “You can’t change who you are, but you can bring out that truth in who you are through really considering what you want to represent by what you’re putting on.”
    • “Challenging times – those are the times when we’re forged in the fire. If I don’t have haters, I’m doing something wrong. If you’re not ruffling some feathers then you’re not doing enough.”
    • “If you’re showing up for your life – even if you don’t want to – and presenting the person you want to become, that’s how you close the gap.”
    • “Success leaves clues – so I started following those clues!”
    • “Gratitude, journaling, having a morning practice and really getting clear on next steps for reaching your goals – and working with a coach, of course – is the most powerful way to really create a life and business that you love.”
    • “You don’t have to keep asking whether there is more. There is, and it’s definitely inside of you. There are so many people who want to unlock it with you.”

    Daniel Giordano

    SUMMARY:

On this episode of the All-In Podcast, Daniel’s guest shares some of the key ingredients specific to establishing and growing a transgenerational family business. Founder of the Goldhill Group, Jonathan Goldhill grew up outside of New York City, watching his own father and grandfather manage and grow their own company. The rewards are significant and – sometimes – so are the challenges.

The Goldhill Group provides strategic thinking, execution planning, and accountability coaching to businesses. Based in the Los Angeles metro area, the consultancy serves closely-held and family business clients in the lower to middle market nationwide.

Next-Gen entrepreneurs looking to advance a legacy started by parents, grandparents or other family relations have to think not just about taking the reins but keeping that business relevant. Over 30 years of growing his coaching consultancy, Jonathan has tracked what works – and doesn’t – when it comes to building on a previous generation’s foundation. Very often visionary decision-making upsets status quo and tries interpersonal communications skills, which is why Jonathan wrote his book, Disruptive Successor: Driving Growth in Your Family Business.

Enjoy this lively conversation that spans Jonathan’s career, with its twists and turns, and wraps up with a peek inside his playbook, which is designed to help family businesses scale up and evolve with the times. It’s a unique sweet spot – and easy to understand why Jonathan has gone “all-in.”

    KEY TOPICS:

    • Jonathan shares a bit about his upbringing in Westchester County, NY, and how it influenced his formative understanding of what it means to live an integral life.
    • A sociology major at UC Santa Barbara, Jonathan’s early career was about empowering communities and fostering positive social change.
    • Early entrepreneurial ventures included events in the New Age space and an art/clothing company that taught him some valuable lessons and sparked his decision to get his MBA.
    • Jonathan has found that family businesses often have to morph within a single generation and alter some of the more staid patterns that prevailed for decades.
    • There are common threads that presage multi-generational wealth:
      • Diversification – Taking chips off the table and reallocating into other asset classes that don’t require a lot of upkeep.
      • Scaling – Resisting complacency with vision and a determination to grow.
      • Purpose – Assessing and defining what it is that feeds an appetite for business.
    • Jonathan hasn’t experienced many professional set-backs, but shares some of the challenges he faced trying to scale up a coaching consultancy business.
    • 1 Piece of Advice? Surround yourself with A-team players. The only thing more costly than top-of-the-line talent is mediocre talent.
    • Jonathan’s playbook includes:
      • Focus on priorities.
      • Measure performance.
      • Have regular meetings to review metrics.
    • What’s next for Jonathan: Once fully immunized, he’s back on the road meeting with clients in-person and promoting his podcast, which is based on his book, Disruptive Successor: Driving Growth in Your Family Business.
    • Jonathan provides contact info and refers listeners to tools and other information at his consulting website (resources below).

    KEY QUOTES:

    • “My family business clients were loyal. I did really well managing in the spaces between them – the unspoken words, conflict. Helping them to scale the business and work with … what I term the disruptive successor.”
    • “The speed and pace of change, due to technology, process model improvements and quality improvements, it’s much faster today.”
    • “For family businesses to stay relevant, next-gen leaders can’t just ride the coattails of his/her mom or dad.”
    • “People matter first. If you don’t surround yourself with a great team of players, then you are missing out on some incredible opportunities.”
    • “You can have great sales systems but if you don’t have good people who can execute on it, it’s like a leaky bucket. You keep pouring in water that keeps leaking out.”

75: Steven Lewis, Navigating the Copywriting Industry

    Daniel Giordano

    SUMMARY:

On this episode of the All-In Podcast, Daniel speaks with Steven Lewis of Taleist copywriting. Steven’s career began in web development, during which time he found himself ahead of the curve, constantly explaining to people what a website was. Afterward, he turned to writing and has been working with copywriting which, he notes, doesn’t change and will never change.

Steven says that he prefers not to gravitate toward a niche because he likes the excitement of a variety but also because it’s advantageous to bring things from one area into another. His specialization is simply making copywriting work online. The difference between content writing and copywriting is that copywriters not only need to entertain and inform (like copy writers) but they also have to get the reader to do something. This is the hard part.

When asked about a challenge in copywriting, Steven notes that an ongoing setback in copywriting is education and getting clients to understand why copywriting is a bigger investment than a couple hundred bucks. The traffic that comes to their website has to read something that converts into an action step.

At the end, Steven emphasizes the research that good copywriting involves. It is much more than writing good sentences and there is a lot of work that goes on before a single word is typed. Understanding the client’s business backward and forward is essential and letting them in on your process is also a key to success.

    KEY TOPICS:

    • Steven shares his background growing up in Hong Kong and how he got into writing
    • Copywriting hasn’t changed and won’t change
    • The difference between copywriting and content writing
    • The challenge of Steven’s journey through copywriting
    • Steven’s advice to someone struggling with conversion
    • How Steven tells clients about the research copywriting involves

    KEY QUOTES:

    • “Copywriting is one of those things that hasn’t changed at all ever. Human psychology hasn’t changed. The media hasn’t really changed.”
    • “You bring things from one area to another area… I think if you niche too much and then you wear a groove, eventually you can’t see over the edges of the groove and that’s worrying.”
    • “Content writing is about educating, informing, and entertaining… Copywriters have to entertain and inform but they also have to get you to do something.”
    • “An ongoing setback with copywriting is that people don’t understand why it’s a bigger investment than a couple hundred bucks.”
    • “You need to understand the client’s business. What do they sell? What do they think they sell?… What do they think makes them different?”
    • “There’s always more that you can do, but you also have to do what is possible within the client’s budget.”

    About Steven Lewis

Steven Lewis, a successful copywriter, grew up in Hong Kong then attended the University in the UK. After university, he returned home to Hong Kong where he got his first job and started his first business which was a web development agency which was, at the time, an uphill battle just to explain what a website was.

From there, he went into journalism and his career has been all about writing since then. He moved to Australia as an adult and now works with Taleist copywriting and seeks to help clients understand the research that goes into good copywriting that leads to conversion.

    Daniel Giordano

    SUMMARY:

On this episode of The All-In podcast, Daniel sits down with therapist, author, and resilience expert Darlene Corbett to talk all things therapy and hope in the age of COVID. Darlene grew up with a disabled sister, a circumstance she believes led to her desire to help people in her career. Throughout their conversation, Darlene and Daniel touch on hypnotherapy, the practices Darlene employs to keep herself healthy as a therapist, and the best ways to beat back isolation.

Darlene’s biggest hope is that through her work she will have helped someone see their worth. Don’t miss this insightful and hopeful conversation from two people who believe that as long as there’s life on earth, there is hope.

    KEY TOPICS:

    • How Darlene’s years growing up in central Massachusetts with a disabled sister led to her career as a therapist.
    • Darlene has been practicing hypnotherapy since 1991, after sexual abuse and trauma came to light in the ‘80s and ‘90s.
    • In the late ‘80s, Darlene experienced a string of nightmares about someone breaking into her condo that she attributes to the trauma she hears about through her practice. The nightmares eventually subsided, but sometimes the sadness and unfairness she hears about can get to her.
    • Some practices that Darlene employs to protect herself from taking on the burdens of her clients include:
      • Starting with that positive foundation
      • Exercising
      • Singing
      • Reading
      • Writing
      • Looking at what she’s grateful for
    • Life can be tough, but Darlene believes we can always look for hope.
    • The biggest psychological issue Darlene has noticed since the beginning of the pandemic is isolation.
      • Anxiety and depression have increased from either feeling disconnected or the fear of getting COVID.
    • For someone who’s experiencing isolation, here are some things they can do:
      • Try to connect virtually
      • Develop something new
      • Get outside and take a walk
    • Darlene hopes that through her work she’s been able to help someone see their worth and helped people in a way that makes them believe in themselves.
    • The best ways to contact Darlene.

    KEY QUOTES:

    • “It was there in the cards, in the stars, in the genes—that’s why I’m a therapist.”
    • “Every so often it gets to me when I hear such sadness, such unfairness.”
    • “I do things that distract me, that take me away, and I remind myself that sitting with people that have wounds—inward wounds, outward wounds, or both—I remind myself that I’m very blessed.”
    • “As long as we have life on this earth, there’s hope. Be open to the possibility that you can develop something new in every chapter of your life.”
    • “Nothing truly stays the same. The only thing that is constant is change.”
    • “I want to be remembered for that fact that I could help someone see their worth.”

    About Darlene

I firmly believe it is an honor and a pleasure to speak to associations and organizations as I engage them to achieve greater success. How do I do this? I remind audiences that how we think is everything, and changing mindset is the beginning of getting unstuck. My book, Stop Depriving The World of You, embodies my absolute belief that everyone is capable of getting unstuck no matter age or circumstances.

All organizations and people plateau at some point for a variety of reasons. Consequently, they become mired in a certain mindset and get stuck. During these static periods of performance, they can benefit from discovering dormant strengths and talents as a way to change mindset, get unstuck, and make way for growth and change.

With over thirty years of experience working with professionals to alter their mindset and get unstuck, I have developed and utilized the tools to augment this and attain peak performance for greater success. My high-content speeches provide individuals and organizations these same strategies needed to overcome the normal dips and plateaus that inhibit performance. By implementing these strategies, mindset will change, performance will increase, potential will be unleashed, and success will be achieved at the optimal level desired.

I have a dual degree in Psychology and Urban Studies. In addition, I received my masters’ degree from Boston University and have been a licensed therapist in the State of MA for over 25 years. I am an active member of several industry associations, including the National Speakers Association, Toastmasters International and the Wachusett Chamber of Commerce. Currently, I serve on the Board of Directors for Abby’s House in Worcester, MA.

I am a Featured Contributor with BizCatalyst 360 where I have a column “Inspiring You,” and I have been quoted in Knox News, MSN.com, Bustle, and Best Life. Other articles and blogs can be found on DarleneCorbett.com, LinkedIn, Sixty and Me, Goodreads and Thrive Global.
